Relapse Prevention for Co-Occurring Disorders
Integrated Support for Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery
Living with a co-occurring disorder—where mental health challenges and substance use issues intersect—can feel like trying to untangle two complex and interconnected threads. Recovery isn’t just about managing one issue; it’s about understanding how both conditions impact each other and learning how to sustain wellness across the full spectrum of your experience.
At Silver Lining, our Relapse Prevention for Co-Occurring Disorders Group is designed specifically for individuals navigating the dual challenges of substance use and mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. We provide a structured, supportive space to build lasting recovery skills, strengthen emotional regulation, and connect with others who understand the unique path of dual diagnosis recovery.
You don’t have to manage it all alone. We’re here to help you stay grounded, connected, and empowered.
What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?
Co-occurring disorders—also known as dual diagnoses—refer to the presence of both a substance use disorder and one or more mental health conditions. These conditions often interact in complex ways:
Mental health symptoms can increase vulnerability to substance use.
Substance use may temporarily mask or intensify mental health symptoms.
Recovery from one without addressing the other can leave clients feeling stuck or prone to relapse.
Common co-occurring combinations include:
Depression and alcohol or cannabis use disorder
Anxiety and sedative use disorder
PTSD and opioid or alcohol use disorder
Our group approach helps participants gain tools to manage both their mental health symptoms and substance use patterns, all in one integrated setting.
Why a Specialized Relapse Prevention Group?
Traditional relapse prevention programs may focus only on substance use without adequately addressing the mental health components that contribute to relapse. Similarly, mental health groups may not provide space to explore addictive behaviors or cravings.
Our specialized group bridges that gap by addressing both elements in tandem—because sustainable recovery requires attention to your whole self.
This group offers:
Integrated treatment strategies that support both mental health and substance use goals
Psychoeducation about the interplay between mental health symptoms and relapse
Peer connection with others who understand the complexity of co-occurring disorders
Compassionate accountability to help you stay grounded in your recovery plan
Who Is This Group For?
This group is ideal for individuals who:
Have a diagnosed or suspected co-occurring disorder
Are in early or ongoing recovery from a substance use disorder
Are managing mental health symptoms that increase relapse risk
Have completed higher levels of care (such as IOP or residential treatment) and need ongoing support
Feel isolated or misunderstood in their recovery journey
We welcome adults of all backgrounds and identities. You don’t need to have everything “figured out”—you just need a willingness to show up and explore what healing looks like for you.
Evidence-Based, Trauma-Informed Approach
Our group facilitators integrate evidence-based modalities known to support co-occurring recovery, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Build skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Learn how to stay grounded in your values while managing difficult emotions or urges.
Motivational Interviewing (MI): Strengthen your internal motivation for recovery, especially when ambivalence arises.
Trauma-Informed Care: Explore your recovery with compassion, safety, and choice—especially if your mental health or substance use is trauma-related.
