Are You a Negative Person?

Have you been told that you’re a negative person? Do you feel negative most days? If so, you may struggle with negative thinking, and it could be affecting how you function and interact with others. The good news is that there are things you can do to be a more positive person, and feel more positive in general. It takes some work, but read on to find out how.

  1. Record your thoughts

The first step in changing negative thoughts is to really identify what you are thinking and saying to yourself on a daily basis. Jot down your thoughts on a daily basis. Notice judgmental and critical thoughts about self and others. Notice “shoulds”, “can’t”, and “never” thoughts. Write down all of these thoughts, and any others that are negative.

  2. Practice thought switching

Thought switching is basically exactly how it sounds, switch those negative thoughts into healthy ones! Write down each negative thoughts, and then beside it right a healthy thought. Repeat the healthy thought to yourself and notice how the new thoughts makes you feel.

  3. Write a gratitude list each morning

One of the easiest ways to shift a negative attitude is by practicing gratitude. Each morning write a list of at least 5 things you are grateful for. Notice how you feel after writing the list.

  4. Surround yourself with healthy, positive people

Who we surround ourselves with can also have an impact on our thinking. If you notice that the people you are spending time with are negative people, then their thoughts and feelings might be rubbing off on you. Try spending time with healthy positive people, and notice how that affects your own thoughts and feelings.

These are just a few steps to take in order to stop being a negative person, and start being a healthy positive person. Once you start thinking more positively, you’ll notice a change in your feelings and behaviors.
